NIGERIAN LABOUR UPDATE: NLC SETS UP NEW COMMITTEES

The Nigerian Labour Congress has set up a new committee to settle the current uprisings between Nigerian Labours (Civil Servants) and the State Governments over 18,000 Naira minimum wages for workers Nationwide. Below is an additional news report for more information on the committees.

Titled "NLC SETS UP COMMITTEE ON ANTI-UNIONISM AND ANTI-CAUSUALISATION"

The NLC in its plan to end the plights of workers in the private sector has set up a committee on anti-unionism and anti-casualisation.
Mr. Emma Ugboaja, Acting General Secretary of the NLC, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that many private sector workers were undergoing one from of slavery or another.
Ugboaja said the congress established the anti-unionism and anti-casualisation committee in pursuit of its traditional role of librating and workers and bringing them succor.
He said that the committee has the NLC’s National Treasurer, Mr. Wahab Ayuba who is also the President of the Medical Health Workers Union of Nigeria, as its chairman.
``The mandate of that committee is to do all within the power of the Nigerian labour movement to liberate the enslaved Nigerian workers in every sector; be them private schools, private hospitals, hotels, telecom, anywhere that the Nigerian worker is currently engaged and is not enjoying the benefits of a decent work agenda as espoused by the ILO.’’

Ugboaja said the committee had been in existence in the past, but was almost going moribund, noting that the NLC decided to re-invigorate it in the light of increasing maltreatment of workers in the private sector.
He added that more importantly Nigeria, which served on the governing board of the ILO, was party to the international body’s resolution on decent work agenda.
``The decent work agenda seeks to ensure four cardinal points of social dialogue on the rights of the worker at work of employment creation and social security, ’’ Ugboaja said .
He added that with this resolution the NLC intended to ensure that every worker got a decent work agenda.
Ugboaja stressed that the committee would ensure that every worker who desired to belong to a union had no hindrance whatsoever.
He said the committee’s mandate was also to ensure that the private sector implemented the new national minimum wage of N18,000.

``The way these organisations have also operated, they had clearly ignored the laws of the country and because workers didn’t have any platform to canvass for their right, they had always gone working in silence under slavish condition.
``So with the impetus of the national minimum wage, it’s also the desire to make sure that no Nigerian worker that is covered by this law is denied the benefits of this law.’’
Ugboaja added that the NLC was determined to ensure that no worker in the public or organised private sector received less than the newly-approved N18,000 minimum wage.
