Due to the recent flood that ravaged some parts of Nigeria. I have decided to publish a news report by NAN on the steps taking by the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Ajimobi to avoid similar occurrence in the State. So read the full report as quoted below:
Gov. Abiola Ajumobi of Oyo State, Nigeria on Sunday inaugurated a 12-member task force to initiate measures to prevent a recurrence of flood disasters in the state. News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the preventive move came in the wake of a prediction that another flood disaster was likely both in Oyo and Sokoto states.The governor said that the task force was put in place to fashion out measures which the state could take to forestall a similar mishap.
He said members of the task force were selected based on their professional competencies in environmental management, regional and urban planning as well as water resources and civil engineering. According to the governor, the task force, headed by Dr Bolanle Wahab, is expected to take inventory of water courses in Ibadan metropolis.
The task force is also expected to identify all structures along waterways and clear water paths up to a pre-determined level beginning with the most affected
communities. Other terms of reference include evolving strategies for inclusive environment and waste management, suggesting emergency response mechanisms for unexpected flood and evolving effective sanitation.
It will in addition recommend any other measures necessary for effective environmental management. Responding, Wahab lauded the governor for his quick response to the last flood disaster, which led to the rescue of some of the victims. “The people of Oyo State have never seen this done before. This was a demonstration of the willingness of the state government to ensure the well being of the people,”he said. He assured the governor that he would work in concert with other members of the task force to accomplish the set goal.
