CONSTITUTION REVIEW COMMITTEE IN NIGERIA: SENATE NAME MEMBERS

Read the following report on constitution review as reported by NAN.
The Senate on Wednesday named a 47-member constitution review committee that will carry out further review of some aspects of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The committee, which has Deputy Senate President Ike  Ekweremadu according to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) as chairman, is expected to look at certain issues in the constitution that have remained contentious but very important.
According to the Senate President, David Mark, some fundamental areas that would be reviewed include; state creation, the local government system, devolution of powers, revenue allocation, among others.
Earlier in his address to the Senate on its resumption from a six-week recess, the Senate President had promised Nigerians that the constitution amendment would be a top priority of the seventh Senate.
``I congratulate members of the sixth National Assembly for breaking the jinx of constitution amendment in Nigeria. The onus is therefore on us to build on this success. We shall endeavour to produce a workable constitution that will stand the test of time,’’ he said.
The Senate President had also said that the 2010 Electoral Act would be reviewed to address issues ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in some state and the 2015 general elections.
The Senate at its plenary also called on the Federal Government to immortalise the former Chief of General Staff and Vice President, Admiral Augustus Aikhomu.
The resolution was passed following a motion raised on the floor of the Senate by Sen. Odion Ugbesia (PDP-EDO) on the demise of  Aikhomu.

Contributing to debate on the motion, Sen. Awesu Kuta noted that the late Aikhomu was a loyal vice president whose contributions inspired the then Head of State to create more states.
Sen. Barnabas Gemade, in his contribution, said Aikhomu was a peace-loving man who fought relentlessly to unite warring factions in every parts of the country.
The Senate President described the late former vice president as an officer and a gentleman, adding that the history of the country would not be complete if his name did not feature prominently.
The Senate constituted a nine-man delegation, led by the Senate President, to visit and condole with the family and the people and government of Edo.
Meanwhile, a Bill for an Act to establish the Chartered Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Nigeria was stepped down following objections from some senators that the Bill was a proliferation of the Accountancy profession.
The sponsor of the Bill, Umaru Dahiru (PDP Sokoto) had in his lead debate said the Bill was meant to strengthen the study and development of science of cost and management accounting.
Sen. Heineken Lokpobiri, however, argued that the bill was absolutely unnecessary as it was a proliferation of the accounting profession, which, he said, was detrimental to the profession.
Sen. George Sekibo advised the sponsor of the bill to call for the amendment of the existing laws in accountancy rather than bring up a new bill.
