2011: PDP governors split over Jonathan’s ambition

PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan may have broken the ranks of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors, it was learnt Thursday.
Three teams have been formed to coordinate Jonathan’s campaign, which will begin on September 18 when he is expected to announce that he is in the race. He will be the chief co-ordinator.
The split of the PDP governors may have foreclosed the likelihood of the adoption of one of them as a consensus presidential candidate.
Investigation by The Nation revealed that no fewer than 20 of the 29 PDP governors have pledged to support the President at the primaries.
It was learnt that contrary to an earlier agreement to work together and present a common candidate, many of the governors have been sneaking into the Presidential Villa to forge working alliances with Jonathan over the 2011 polls.
It was gathered that desperate bid for second term tickets led some of the governors to pledge their support for the President’s aspiration.   Full article
